A macromolecular motor protein complex consisting of ten 22 to 150 kD subunits, which binds to microtubules and cytoplasmic dynein. It is involved in various cellular functions, including ER-to-Golgi transport, centripetal movement of lysosomes and endosomes, spindle formation, chromosome movement, nuclear positioning, and axonogenesis.
DCTN1 interacts with the dynein intermediate chain by directly binding to dynein and to microtubules via a highly conserved glycine-rich cytoskeleton-associated protein—CAP-Gly domain.
