MOLECULAR MEDICINE

The gene on chromosome Xq13.1 that encodes non-POU domain containing—octamer-binding (OMIM:300084, UniProtKB: Q15233), a DNA- and RNA binding protein involved in several nuclear processes, including transcriptional regulation and RNA splicing. NONO regulates the circadian clock by repressing the transcriptional activator activity of the CLOCK-ARNTL/BMAL1 heterodimer. It plays a key role in the functional organisation of GABAergic synapses and in regulating synaptic RNAs and the GPHN/gephyrin scaffold structure.

Molecular pathology Rearrangement between NONOand transcription factor E3 may be causally linked to papillary renal cell carcinoma.

Synonyms DNA-binding P52/P100 complex, 52 kDa subunit, NRB54, NMT55, non-POU-domain-containing—octamer-binding, P54, P54NRB, 54 KDa Nuclear RNA- and DNA-binding protein, 55 KDa nuclear protein
