IAPP

ENDOCRINOLOGY

Definition The gene on chromosome 12p12.1 that encodes islet amyloid polypeptide (OMIM: 147940, UniProtKB: P10997), a polypeptide commonly found in pancreatic islets, which selectively inhibits insulin-stimulated glucose utilisation and glycogen deposition in muscle, but not in adipocytes.

Molecular pathology The IAPP gene product is often found in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus–DM or in patients with insulinomas. While the association of amylin and the development of type 2 DM is well known, a direct causative role for amylin is uncertain.

Synonyms DAP, IAP, diabetes-associated peptidee, islet amyloid polypeptide (diabetes-associated peptide; amylin), insulinoma amyloid peptide, amylin
