light hypnotic state
A light hypnotic state which most commonly occurs in a background of fatigue, coupled with the monotony of driving on long, straight roads uninterrupted by crossings, municipalities, and other visually distracting factors. The victim typically drives for long distances, responds appropriately to external events but has no recollection of the “lost” period of time.
Some workers regard the highway hypnosis phenomenon as a dissociation of consciousness, in which one stream of consciousness drives the car while another stream deals with other matters.
