ghost riding

PUBLIC HEALTH

An adrenaline junkie activity in which the participant puts a car’s transmission in gear, then exits the car to dance on the bonnet or roof or perform another equally inane act, whilst having little to no control over the car’s motion. Not surprisingly, ghost riding (GR) may result in death or injury.

This is similar to and may overlap with “car surfing”, but differs in that in the latter, a driver may present and conceivably can increase the vehicle’s speed beyond that of simply putting the transmission in gear. Both activities are dangerous. GR cannot be done with a manual transmission that has a clutch pedal.

Synonyms Ghost-riding the whip, ghostin’
