Definition A type of accident that occurs when a bicyclist hits an opening or opened car–or other motorised vehicle–door. The term may also encompass accidents that occur when a cyclist swerves into traffic to avoid an opening car door. 

More dangerous doors Doors with vertically oriented forward hinges

Less dangerous doors

• Doors with horizontally oriented hinges (gull wing doors)

• Sliding doors (as found in minivans)

• Doors with rear hinges (so-called suicide doors)

Prevalence Uncertain; doorings comprise between 12% to 20% of recorded bicycle accidents

Mortality Data are weak, possibly 3%; accident reports may not specify doorings
