Definition A person at a social function who volunteers, or is “volunteered” to stay sober and chauffeur inebriated revellers home at the festivity’s end

The non-drinking driver campaign is credited with changing public awareness about drinking and driving, and is partly responsible for the 25% decrease in drunk driving-related accidents in the US since 1989. The term designated driverhas been incorporated into the popular culture, largely through the efforts of workers at the Harvard School of Public Health, in persuading Hollywood producers to incorporate the concept into television and film story lines
