dart-out
PUBLIC HEALTH
noun A popular back formation from the verbal form–to dart out–for a child who runs into a street with moving motor vehicles–MVs, often chasing a ball.
In the typical case, the child is undetected until directly in front of the MV, as he/she is hidden from view by parked vehicles and tall stationary objects.
Darting out is a common cause of accidents and fatalities in children age 5-10; younger children are more often run over by a parent backing a car out of the driveway.
Synonyms Child darting-out, darting-out accident, darting-out phenomenon
