Definition A self-explanatory term for a major cause of residential fires resulting in injury and death, which typically occur when the stove is left unattended or the food forgotten for a period of time, especially if the parties are drinking (alcohol).
In 2011, cooking was involved in about 156,300 home structure fires in the United States, resulting in 470 deaths, 5,390 injuries and $1.0 billion in direct property damage. Cooking caused 43% of reported home fires, 16% of home fire deaths, and 38% of home fire injuries.
