Definition Code Amber is a message announced over a hospital’s public address system warning the staff of:

(1) Infant abduction (the usual understanding of Code Amber—CA)

Comment AMBER is a backronym for America’s Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response. The name comes directly from Amber Hagerman, a 9-year-old girl who was abducted from her home and later found brutally murdered. AMBER Alert is preferable, given the potential confusion with the rarely used alternative definition of CA as a warning of a violent crime in progress–(2), below

(2) Theft or armed robbery in progress within the facility
