PUBLIC HEALTH

An advisory issued by a water system operator (usually a town) stating that the drinking water may have been contaminated by potentially pathogenic bacteria and must be boiled–a rolling boil of at least one minute–by the end user.

Boil order triggers

• Compromised well or spring supplying the system

• Compromised pipelines or water tank

• Cross connection or back siphonage event caused contaminated water to enter the water system

• Contamination found during routine water testing
