A popular term referring to refined carbohydrate-based food products that are high in calories (sugar, corn syrup, maltose, fructose) and often also high in sodium, artificial sweeteners and flavours, which has minimal nutritive value, as it is low in protein, vitamins, dietary fibre, and essential fats.

Empty calories are typical of “junk” or snack foods
