eat for two
eating for two
Definition A popular term referring to the carte blanche that a pregnant woman supposedly has to “pig out” whilst pregnant, given that she’s eating for both herself and a growing baby, and (theorectically) would need to double her caloric intake.
Comment Not true. Julie Redfern, a dietitian at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston burst this old wives tale by indicating that only 300 more calories/day are needed to cover the bun in the oven and consumption of any more puts mom at risk of gestational diabetes, backaches, hypertension, and the need for a caesarean section because the baby is macrosomic.
