Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase

MICROBIOLOGY

A plasmid transferrable beta-lactamase carried by an increasing number of strains of Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter spp, and other Enterobacteriaceae.

Hydrolysis of the beta-lactam ring  renders many of the antibiotics–in particular extended spectrum cephalosporins and carbapenems: imipenem, meropenem, and ertapenem–ineffective. Nonsusceptibility to carbapenems can also be mediated by non-KPC mechanisms–e.g., AmpC-type β-lactamase and porin loss, but this mechanism has not been significant thus far.

Synonym KPC
