crippled strain

Definition A strain of a pathogenic bacteria, genetically engineered to survive only on specialised culture media.

Crippled strains can be manipulated with relative impunity, with little practical concern that the strain will escape from the lab setting and cause a Hollywood-style epidemic starring Morgan Freeman, Nicholas Cage and Ben Kingsley
