MEDSPEAK

Any incentive which has unintended and undesirable consequences that run counter to the interests of those creating the incentives.

Examples, perverse incentives

• Item of service payments, which incentivise performance of ineffective or potentially harmful procedures

• Before the UK’s Anatomy Act 1832, executed criminals were the only legal source of cadavers for the training of surgeons. The lack of legal bodies incentivised murder and grave robbing in pre-Victorian Britain to meet the demand for cadavers.
