handicapped physician

MEDSPEAK

Definition A physician with physical limitations–e.g., with paraplegia, who actively practices medicine, as he/she compensates for the limitations.

Synonym Handicapped doctor

In the working parlance, the phrase handicapped physician is not synonymous with impaired physician, the latter of which has a pejorative overtone. Impaired practitioners are limited by issues related to substance abuse, impulse control, sexual improprieties, and so on, and may have had sanctions placed on their medical practice.
