episodic consultation

A statutory term used by the Texas State Medical Board referring to one-off or periodic consultation services provided by doctors who reside outside of Texas.

Per the Medical Board, despite their lack of physical presence, doctors who provide such consultations in Texas–e.g., by mail, e-mail, telephone, or telemedicine, must be licensed to practice medicine there.

Violation of the law is a Class A misdemeanor–$4000 and/or incarceration for up to 1 year; a second offence is punishable as a 3rd-degree felony, which may results in up to $10,000 and imprisonment for up to 2 years
