Definition A disruption of the normal psychosocial barrier between a professional and a client—e.g., a reversal of roles in the relationship between a doctor and a patient.
Comment Boundary violation dilemmas–BVDs occur when a professional places his/her needs first in the relationship, twisting the ethics of providing care. BVDs are of critical concern in the doctor-patient relationship, and crossing the line may result in removal of one’s BVDs and sexual misconduct.
