board eligible

GRADUATE EDUCATION

Definition adjective Referring to a North American physician* who has completed the minimum years–4-8 years of post-medical school residency training, and is eligible to sit for a medical or surgical specialty board examination–the “boards”, which tests theoretical knowledge in the area of specialisation.

*Or other health care professional.

Comment While the term board eligible was officially disavowed by the American Board of Medical Specialties NEJM 1988; 318:356, it remains in use, presumably because there is no viable alternative
