HEALTH CARE LEGISLATION, MANAGED CARE

A US legislative Act passed by both Houses (Congress, Senate), which is billed as the most significant healthcare legislation since the creation of Medicare, which is designed to ensure that all Americans have access to affordable health care

The Supreme Court weighed in, declared it constitutional and that its most controversial provision–the individual mandate to obtain insurance coverage or else pay a penalty–was permissible under the taxation powers of Congress.

The intent of the PPACA is to reduce both the number of uninsured Americans and the overall costs of health care through various mechanisms, including mandates, subsidies, and tax credits to employers and individuals to increase the coverage rate. The Act requires insurers to cover all applicants and offer the same rates regardless of pre-existing conditions or gender.

Synonyms Affordable Care Act, Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, PPACA
