durable medical equipment
Definition A term of art defined by the US Dept of Health and Human Services as equipment that can withstand repeated use*, is primarily used for a medical purpose, and is not generally used in the absence of illness or injury
Examples Walkers, wheelchairs, hospital beds, oxygen delivery systems, seat lift mechanisms, etc
*Nondisposable, reusable equipment. Medicare will only pay for durable medical equipment that has been prescribed by the treating physician. The formal document is called a certificate of medical need.
