Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange
A coalition of health care organisations which promote standards in electronic transactions and connectivity.
WEDI bills itself as the leading authority on the use of health IT to improve healthcare information exchange in order to enhance the quality of care, improve efficiency and to reduce costs of the American healthcare system.
WEDI was formed in 1991 by the US Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). It was named in the 1996 HIPAA legislation as an advisor to HHS and continues to fulfill that role today. WEDI’s goal is to improve healthcare through widespread adoption of e-commerce protocols, technologies and tools. Its role is to define, prioritise and reach consensus on key issues affecting development and implementation of electronic interchange of health-related data.
