INFORMATICS, PATIENT CARE
A measure of a person’s ability to understand health-related information and make informed decisions about that information.
Health literacy includes proper interpretation of prescription dosing instructions and following of self care advice. Up to 46% of patients misunderstand one or more dosing instructions. Patients at greatest risk of adverse drug events are the very young and very old and those who do not speak English as a native language.
