Definition Any cytokine–e.g., IL-6, IL-1α, IL-1β, TNF-α, TNF-β, IFN-α, and possibly also IFN-gamma, and macrophage inflammatory protein-1, that induces a febrile reaction—without requiring the formation of another cytokine—typically in a background of an acute phase response
