convalescent serum

Definition A term of art for serum from a person who has recovered from a particular infection–e.g., scarlet fever, which is rich in antibodies against the infection’s causative organism, and which was once used to manage patients with the same infection.

Comment Whereas acute-phase serum has increased IgM antibodies, convalescent serum has decreased IgM, and increased IgG antibodies.
