Definition A term of art for a well-circumscribed focus of inflammation which lacks the usual signs of a hot abscess*.

*E.g., calor, rubor, tumour, dolor–per Aulus Cornelius Celsus, Greek philosopher who identified the signs of inflammation

Cold abscesses classically occur in paravertebral tuberculosis. They may occur in normal persons infected by attenuated strains of micororganisms, or in patients with hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome
