Definition A phenomenon that may occur when a very important person–V.I.P.* visits or is admitted to hospital and in so doing, disrupts the normal course of patient care.
*V.I.P. by virtue of fame, position or claim on public interest.
Often the V.I.P. wants to be treated as any other patient, but may in fact receive less than optimal emergency and critical care, as the patient management team may inappropriately alter its standard operating procedures.
