A popular term for the most likely diagnosis for a particular group of symptoms, which is based on the physician’s experience, the patient’s clinical epidemiology, and early confirmatory evidence provided by ancillary studies–e.g., imaging findings. A working diagnois guides further diagnostic tests and provisional treatment, while awaiting special or more definitive studies–e.g., immunoperoxidase stains or results from a reference lab.
