A clinical trial which asked whether recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator–rtPA is effective in the presence of optimal therapy–e.g., metoprolol.

Conclusion Patients receiving metoprolol before hospitalisation had smaller infarcts; beta blockade and thrombolytics have an additive cardioprotective effect due to decreased cardiac work and metabolic demand and improved perfusion via the coronary arteries.
