Abbreviation for Screening to Prevent Heart Failure

An Irish multicentre trial that randomised subjects with cardiovascular risk factors for heart failure managed by routine primary care to screening based on B-type natriuretic peptide–BNP levels and collaborative care if raised vs routine care.

Those with BNP levels above 50 pg/mL underwent a multidimensional intervention: screening echocardiography, risk factor management, and individualised coaching to adhere to medication and healthy lifestyle behaviours.

Conclusion Left ventricular  dysfunction (ejection fraction < 50%, E/E’ > 15 on Doppler echocardiography) or clinical heart failure was reduced in the intervention group compared to the controls.
