A clinical trial which randomised type 2 diabetics at high risk for cardiovascular events. Hypertensive patients in the treatment arm received intense antihypertensive therapy–ACE inhibitor (perindoprel) and a diuretic (indapamide).

Logistics placebo-controlled multinational–primarily Australia; 11,140 patients enrolled

Conclusion Patients receiving the intensive therapy had a 5.6 mm Hg reduction in systolic blood pressure, which translated into a statistically significant 9% reduction in macrovascular events–cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, stroke, and less renal morbidity
