A multicentre trial that randomised 11,000 high-risk hypertensives to receive an ACE inhibitor (benazepril) plus a calcium channel blocker (amlodipine) or an ACE inhibitor plus a thiazide diuretic (hydrochlorothiazide).

Conclusion The trial was ended early because of the higher mortality and morbidity in the ACE inhibitor/thiazide diuretic arm.
