standard gamble technique

A manoeuvre that incorporates patient preferences in the face of uncertainty, expressing the outcomes of different therapeutic options in utility values to be used in analysis of clinical decisions and evaluation of health program.

In a standard gamble, the patient quantifies preferences with respect to specific outcomes, and is asked to choose between a certainty of a particular outcome–e.g., post-phlebitis syndrome intermediate in desirability between the best–i.e., perfect health and the worst–i.e., death possible outcomes and a number of gambles, each with a different probability of having the best and worst outcomes.
