Definition A popular term for a clinical or epidemiological research project conducted by scientists who are not citizens of the host country, who use local contacts to gain access to a population group and/or obtain specimens and samples.

Comment The material is then analysed in the home labs of the visiting scientists, who in some cases neither make the data available to the host investigators, nor include the hosts as authors in the reports, despite their contributions.
