run-in period

EVIDENCE-BASED MEDICINE

The period before a clinical trial is begun, in which no treatment is given.

The run-in period can be called a washout period if the treatments that participants used before entering the trial are discontinued. Data from the RIP of a trial are occasionally of value. RIP data can serve a valuable role in screening out ineligible or non-compliant participants; in ensuring that participants are in a stable condition; and in providing baseline observations.
