PHARMACOLOGY
Definition A lot number is a specific combination of letters, numbers, or symbols from which the complete history of the manufacture, processing, packing, holding, and distribution of a batch or lot of an active pharmaceutical ingredient, consumer product or other material can be determined.
When a specific drug or chemical has been found to have unexpected toxic effects, lot numbers become supremely important in public health efforts to trace individuals exposed and identify material that has not be yet been distributed or sold and remove it from the supply chain.
Synonym Batch number, control number
