Definition France’s major medical research organisation (Institut Nationale de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale), which is jointly overseen by the Ministries of Health and Research.
Founded in 1941 as the Institut Nationale d’Hygiene and renamed in 1964, INSERM consists of 339 research units, most of which are located within French hospitals. It has 6500 permanent staff members.
