An ad hoc term for a frantic (hysterical) patient in a placebo-controlled clinical trial of a therapy for a dread disease*, who learns that he or she was in the control (non-treatment) arm and the treatment arm patients had (much) better outcomes.

*AIDS, cancer, multiple sclerosis, etc.
