super altruism

SOCIOLOGY

Definition A term of art for altruism by one or more individuals which has a great personal cost but no obvious advantages for the benefactor(s). The classic example of super altruism cited in studies about this phenomenon is that of living anonymous kidney donation.

The medical profession rightly scrutinises the sanity of such donors to exclude an underlying psychopathology. The cited reference provides much food for thought.

Synonym Exceptional altruisim
