ETHICS

A popular term for a euthanasia device invented by Dr Jack Kevorkian (1928-2011, aka Dr Death), which allows individuals to control their own painless suicide.

The device consists of 3 hanging bottles–saline, thiopental, potassium chloride–KCl, connected to an IV line and a switch on a timer. Once the IV is placed, the suicidee pushes a button that switches the flow to the thiopental sedative; an automatic timer containing KCl is later activated; death occurs within minutes.

Synonym Dr Kevorkian’s machine
