ETHICS, SOCIAL MEDICINE
Definition A pejorative term coined in the fashion of designer clothes and other objects, in which society views children as a commodity with physical features that can be chosen or “designed”.
Comment The technological state of reproduction is such that babies can be chosen to avoid genetic conditions by means of a preimplantation genetic diagnostic workup–aka embryoscreening. The term designer baby has also been applied to the largely theoretical genetic engineering to select for desired traits in a child, e.g. sex, hair colour and other cosmetic traits, athletic ability, or intelligence.
