Herbal medicine A mushroom which contains B vitamins, cortinelin–an antibacterial, lentinan–­a polysaccharide complex that stimulates the immune system. It has been used as a medicinal herb for upper respiratory diseases, poor circulation, liver disease, exhaustion and weakness, and to boost qi (life energy). These mushrooms are said to prevent premature ageing, hypertension, AIDS, etc., etc.,   

Fringe oncology Shiitake mushrooms have been used for cancer, via proprietary extracts–e.g., PSK, Lentinan. Their efficacy is at best dubious.
