One of two “anti-cancer” medicines heavily promoted in the 1950s by Harvey Hoxsey, which consists of cascara from prickly ash bark, buckthorn bark, red clover blossoms, burberry root, burdock root, licorice root, pokeweed, and alfalfa.

The FDA investigated the Hoxsey “medicines”—including the so-called black medicine, and concluded that they were ineffective.
