A generic term for any non-pharmacological, non-device-based intervention–e.g., stress relaxation, imagery, touch therapy, and prayer–for a medical (non-surgical) condition.
There is little peer-reviewed data on the effects of noetic therapy. The MANTRA* trial assessed mind-body-spirit interventions as adjunctive treatments for reducing stress in patients with unstable coronary syndromes and found that patients in the stress management, imagery, and touch therapy arms did better than non-intervention groups (remote intercessory prayer had no effect), but the study group was small and the findings subjective. More study is needed.
