curcumin

ALTERNATIVE HEALTH

Definition A chemical extract from the spice turmeric (Curcuma longa) for which early data suggest may prevent cancer, slow its spread, make chemotherapy more effective and protect native cells from damage by radiation therapy. It is the subject of ongoing basic research.

Comment Curcumin was anecdotally reported to have antiretroviral activity, allegedly by inhibiting critical steps in viral replication. There are no peer reviewed studies to suggest that curcumin has any clinical effect on retroviral proliferation or transmission.
