butcher’s broom (Ruscus aculeatus)

butcher’s broom 


A herbal shrub native to the Mediterranean rim, the roots and rhizomes of which contain neuroscogenin and ruscogenin. It is astringent, diuretic, laxative, and has been used internally or topically for haemorrhoids, rectal inflammation, varicose veins and postural hypotension.  

Synonyms Ruscus aculeatus,  Jew’s myrtle, kneeholy, knee holly, kneeholm, pettigree, sweet broom
