Definition An endogenous peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-α) agonist which acts as a diet-derived satiety messenger. OEA is produced in the small intestine after feeding; its production is suppressed in humans and animal models after prolonged high-fat diets.
Comment Recent data suggest that administration of OEA may restore gut-generated lipid signalling and increase the reward value of less palatable, albeit healthier foods and provide another tool for winning the weight war waged by weak-willed whales.
