A combination of two nucleoside transcription inhibitors–tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine–which was approved by the FDA in 2012 for pre-exposure prophylaxis* to reduce the risk of sexually acquired HIV infection in uninfected high-risk individuals.

*It is the first FDA-approved medication for HIV prophylaxis.

Adverse effects Lactic acidosis, liver toxicity; other findings associated with its use include weakness or tiredness, myalgia, dyspnoea, stomachache, nausea and vomiting, chills, dizziness, tachycardia or palpitations.
