AIDS, INFECTIOUS DISEASE
A strain of human immunodeficiency virus–HIV identified by workers at Lund University (Sweden) which appears to progress more rapidly than most identified strains of HIV.
A3/02 is a naturally recombinant virus thus far confined to West Africa, that moves from HIV infection to full-blown AIDS in about five years, which is 40% to 50% faster than occurs with most previously identified strains of HIV.
The CDC is rightly concerned that recombinant HIV strains could become more prevalent.
